Nagoya Castle Guide

Nagoya Castle is a representative architectural masterpiece of Japan's Edo period, and it is renowned as one of the "Three Great Castles of Japan" alongside Kumamoto Castle and Himeji Castle. Originally constructed by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1612, its most iconic feature is the pair of golden shachihoko (mythical tiger-headed carp) adorning its roof. Although the current main keep was reconstructed in 1959 using reinforced concrete, it faithfully replicates the grandeur of the original structure. Inside the castle, there is a museum showcasing historical artifacts such as swords and armor, offering visitors a deeper understanding of Nagoya's history. In recent years, the highlight has been the meticulously restored "Honmaru Palace," which showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional Japanese carpentry. The palace interior features the magnificent "Kinpeki Nokie" wall paintings by artists of the Kano school, with their use of gold leaf and vibrant colors providing a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the shogun's residence.
