Puning is situated in the southeast of Guangdong province at the western end of the Chaoshan Plain. It has the largest inland port in eastern Guangdong. A large number of overseas Chinese originate from here, and the area was also a Communist stronghold during the Civil War. Puning is home to a large number of historical attractions including Panlong Temple, Hongyang Ancient Town and the site of a Communist meeting during the Nanchang Uprising.
